Global Youth Service Day is the largest service event led by youth in the world - over 100 countries will be celebrating GYSD throughout the month of April!  ExCEL will be holding GYSD Day of Service on Saturday, April 10 in support of our amazing students. Help engage youth in identifying and addressing the needs of their communities by signing them up!

When registering, please help your students indicate their top two choices:


Project A

Community Agency: American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter

Project: First Aid Preparedness and Train the Trainer

Location: 20 Cook St.

Goals: To become Red Cross Preparedness instructor specializing in presenting First Aid Preparedness to youth audiences

Participants will be trained by American Red Cross Staff on basic first aid techniques as well as disaster preparedness protocols. Participants will also gain skills necessary to become trainers themselves and present this material to younger audiences.

Number of Students:  20 - 25           Age Ranges: 14+

Time: 10AM – 1PM

Project B

Community Agency: Precita Eyes

Project: Service, education, and youth themed mural to be painted on the stage of the auditorium in 20 Cook St.

Location: 20 Cook St.

Goals: To collaborate in a long-lasting project that enables youth to understand how they can send a message through art

Participants will be collaborating on a service-learning themed mural at 20 Cook St. with a Precita Eyes Muralist. All materials will be provided. Please have students wear clothing that they will not mind getting paint on.

 

Number of Students:  15         Age Ranges: Secondary

Time: 9AM – 1PM

 

Project C

Community Agency: America SCORES Bay Area        

Project: Soccer game at Crocker-Amazon followed by a clean-up and generation of report for items found

Location: Crocker-Amazon Park

Goals: To highlight the importance of physical activity while demonstrating how youth can be environmentally conscious advocates for a clean space -

Middle school and high school students will assist elementary school SCORES students in a soccer game by refereeing the game and helping organize the students. This will be followed by a park clean up and a letter writing campaign about park safety and cleanliness to the Neighborhood Parks Council that secondary students will also help lead and partake in. Students will also participate in a technology piece as they film an interview with elementary students on why they feel this park serves a community need.

Number of Students:  20           Age Ranges: Secondary

Time: 9AM – 12PM

 

 

Project D

Community Agency: Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy        

Project: Habitat Restoration and Environmental Justice

Location: Baker Beach

Goals: To protect the integrity of our national parks through restoring a historic feature and learning about an endangered species.

Participants will help enhance rare native plant habitat and create important wildlife corridors i nthe Presidio of San Francisco.  Students will learn about local plants and animals and how to be a habitat hero! Please have students wear clothing they will not mind getting dirty.

Number of Students:  15           Age Ranges: Secondary

Time: 9AM – 12PM
